Has anyone been able to get Openfiler to work on Oracle VM. I have tried with no sucess to get it working from both the ISO and the xen image download (Don't know what I am doing here as there are no instructions for this!).

Very simply.

I am trying to set up an Openfiler Virtual machine under Oracle VM (see www.openfiler.com for openfiler details). Open filer can be downloaded in one of 3 flavours:

1. Open Filer ISO image - This won't work as Oracle VM says it is an usupported OS.
2. OpenFiler VMWare image - This works fine under VM Ware.
3. OpenFiler Xen image - This is essentially just an img file with no instructions on how to get it working!

Basically I want to use Openfiler in a similar manner to http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/hunter_rac10gr2_iscsi.html but using Oracle VM rather than VMWare.

Hopefully this helps.

There have been a lot of issues with the Openfiler pre-built vm in xen environments, as a search for "openfiler non-pae kernel" will show. After installing it on a stand alone machine, I also found that learning the embedded distro it's built on wasn't something I wanted or needed in my collection of time consuming projects.

Openfiler used to be distributed as rpm's for CentOS and an ideal solution would be to roll a new set from their cvs that will install under EL5. It's a non-trivial task but I'm planning to give it a shot when they release version 2.3 that has been on hold for the last several weeks.

I'm also interested in that RAC project you mentioned... looks ideal for Oracle VM!

I found instructions on how to do this at http://www.commoncode.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/OpenFiler and tried them on Oracle VM just now. I can get it to boot (after making sure the grub.conf entry has the correct root= kernel option), but haven't done anything else with it.

Hi

Does anyone have any more information about this?
I am trying to install openfiler 2.3 as an Oracle VM machine using ISO source and it does start, however I never get past the initialisation screen, at the point :

"...
checking if image is initramfs... it is
Freeing initrd memory: 4282k freed"

At this point the installation freezes.

I tried following the URL link as per the previous post but that site does not exist, can anyone help?

Thx
Matt

I managed to get this working by using the x86 version, the x86_64 version does not work.

I used the iso install method to create the virtual machine within Oracle VM and the installation worked correctly.
It is now running fine and presenting iSCSI devices, although only using 100Mb ethernet speed!

Thx
Matt
