The need of SOA is to enable enterprise-wide applications on a standardized way, to be able to interface different kinds of applications without hitting boundaries which are introduced when defining/developing custom applications.
SOA gives you the ability to integrate services without the hasle of doing the plumbing yourself and without needing to search for dependencies within these different siloed applications.
Nowadays SOA is still evolving and new technologies and tools are being proposed and released to even deliver these kind of enterprise-wide applications in a declarative environment.
Do you find this valuable?

Need for SOA now is to plan for better future. Because of internet boom and need for quick software, we have developed so much of the proprietary software that It’s becoming hard to manage and maintain which is costing us a lot even after outsourcing.

If we don't adopt SOA principles now it will be impossible to maintain and manage our software assets for future. The pace with which demand for software is growing we will not be able to meet those.
