Forms Query Runs Slow

I have a query which uses the substr function to fetch some records. the query is fine if I run it using SQL*PLUS while it is dead slow through forms interface. 3  out of 6 found this valuable. Do you?

Hi,
Do you do anything else in the block containing the query?
And how and where do you use the query in Forms?
