I had it running better on my servers. But for some reasons I could not make it personal.
I could not get it installed on my laptop HP Pavillion dv6000

I have tried it on my laptop, which cannot be recommended. It can't do WiFi, doesn't do power management, doesn't understand my graphics card etc. There are Linux updates available for all of this, but they could not be installed because the kernel and the support packages are way behind the curve.

But it's probably fine on a server.

It's aimed at the server market, a job that it does well. Where it truly shines through is the support though.

Oracle's personnel was able to answer questions pertaining to high availability storage interconnection, and mapping bonding + trunked interfaces to virtual machines far more efficiently than Red Hat.

Laptop/Desktop Linux: there's a very limited marked for desktop linux within the Enterprise. It's either confined to mass cloned deployments that don't need to run the MS Office suite - thinking call centers, or to "enthusiast/technical" personnel. Microsoft and Apple spend a lot of resource on desktop useability and integration, something that is truly difficult to accomplish in the open source world.

Better install OELinux 4 update 5 and then install 10gR2. OEL 5 is not certified for 10gR2. 1  out of 19 found this valuable. Do you?

I have used various Linux distributions for almost 15 years and Oracle's is one of the worst out there right now. It's a feeble attempt to do what CentOS excels at, replicating a RHEL installation for less cost. I thought that it would be easy to make a fully Oracle capable install, but when trying to install Oracle it finds a lot of missing packages and settings. You would have thought that they would have made a simple install option that would take care of all the "missing pieces" that the Oracle installer wants, since they presumably want people to install the Oracle DB on the systems that their OS in installed on, but noooo. I'm switching back to CentOS where at least the effort to make the DB work is doable. You have to get an account with Oracle to even get the RPM updates.

I have always doubted Oracle's word that they are really commited to Linux and their half-ass attempt at Enterprise Linux is more proof of that.

Dear,
I am having application on RHEL which is having 16GB of physical memory whidch gets filled in 24 hours. This system is havibg both database and tomcat server on it.When whole physical memory fills up . i stop all the processes including oracle and tomcat's. But still the memory usage is not reduced so much . It's cached memory is as shown below

" total
Mem: 16415044
-/+ buffers/cache:
Swap: 16386292" used free shared buffers cached
10587204 5827840 0 170880 9128936
1287388 15127656
240 16386052

. Please suggest me what could be done to reduce the caching so that it could adjust in 16gb of RAM itself without using swap area.

Issue is very critical.Because for freeing up all the memory i need to reboot the server on daily basis.

Please suggest the optimum solution for this

Did you open a Service Request with Oracle Support? Earlier in this thread is was suggested that Oracle Support was fully proficient supporting Oracle Linux - so I hope that's your experience too... 0  out of 6 found this valuable. Do you?
