Microsoft SAP
Dec 5 2007, 5:49 AM EST Even though SAP denies talk of buyout by Microsoft, Oracle should consider a future with such a combined competitive company. The ERP realm is one of the few unconquered parts of the IT universe for Microsoft and it is probably just a matter of time before Microsoft uses its financial resources to complete the 'invasion'. SAP and Microsoft have for years been working on integration between the Office products and SAP. I have wondered why Oracle isn't putting more support of open source products such as Open Office. It may have to look at stronger partnerships and integration with open source partners and the other companies in IT who strongly support open source in order to compete with the likes of MicroSAP. Because of competition with some products, such as database and app servers, Oracle appears to be at arms length from IBM. It may have to partner with IBM and a large constellation of other major vendors and the open source community to compete in a universe populated with the MicroSAP galaxy. 7 out of 31 found this valuable. Dec 6 2007, 6:24 AM EST MicroSAP; I don't see that happening centuries from now. Oracle already has Peoplesoft I think they should focus more on improving the functionalities on that. 0 out of 10 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Microsoft SAP
Dec 7 2007, 1:58 AM EST While I wouldn't be at all surprised if Microsoft attempted to purchase SAP, I really don't believe it would matter too much. Sure, Microsoft and SAP have worked together for awhile now. Even SQL Server can run SAP, but realistically, how often do you see it in practice? While Open Office (or OpenOffice.org if you want to get all open-saucy about it) is a great office suite, it has a long way to go before it is as full-featured as MS Office. Don't get me wrong, I primarily use Linux and Open Office every day, but Open Office still isn't 100% document-friendly with Word, it's sometimes slow and clunky, and doesn't integrate with Linux (or other Linux apps) nearly as nicely as the Microsoft Platform. I'd rather see Oracle focus on what they're good at than expending resources building a system based solely on a possible future event which may or may not have a significant impact. Just my two cents :) 0 out of 9 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Microsoft SAP
Dec 21 2007, 1:54 PM EST I fully agree to what has been suggested about Oracle embracing Open Office like products. Recently I attended a presentation given by Microsoft about their new ERP Dynamix- (AX) which has it's origins if i remember correctly in great plains. I was surprised to see the user's keenness to use excel like features. It many times happens that once a g8 erp is implemented the user community forgets its earlier pains and then find the user friendly tools like export/charts/pivot more important. I do believe that Oracle considers Microsoft is one of it's important partners but for some reason doubt whether it's integration (w.r.t. Office Suite) with Microsoft will be ever possible especially knowing the fact that Microsoft has it's own agenda to explore erp mkt. This leaves no other choice but to look for options like Open Office. Now we all know any good erp sells on other features which facilitates business or accomodates challenging ever changing Biz. environment but still it's always better to make user's life more easier. Thanks. 0 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

Feb 27 2008, 9:38 AM EST I notice that there is a blog posted on the OTN blogs site on this topic http://blogs.oracle.com/ http://stage.vambenepe.com/archives/169 He notes that a business prof has written an article in the NY Times on the fact that Microsoft should be acquiring SAP rather than Yahoo ('Microhoo'): http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/24/business/24digi.html PM 1 out of 6 found this valuable.
