Unconference
Nov 28 2007, 2:26 PM EST I think the Unconference should be more visible. Unless you go to third floor on Moscone West, you will never know what's happening there! Why not in the exhibitor hall with free t-shirts for attendees... 5 out of 10 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Unconference
Nov 28 2007, 4:23 PM EST As Laurent already said it wasn't to easy to find out what are the Unconference sessions unless you walked to the OTN lounge. They should be integrated into the session builder, so that they can be queried and added to the regular session schedule. It would be fantastic if they show up in the "Sessions changed" section so that they get some attention. Patrick 0 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Unconference
Nov 29 2007, 1:44 AM EST Yes Patrick, but it means speaker registration should occur before OOW. Note that this year, many slots were filled during OpenWorld, speaker spontanously decided to participate. The slot next to mine was cancelled, so I was lucky enough to speak for two hours ;-) 0 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Unconference
Nov 29 2007, 2:28 PM EST I don't think I like the thought of speaker registration. It goes against the spirit of an unconference. I think what we had this year was fine. There is a place for people to put their "intention to speak" posts, so others can see the type of things people may talk about, but it should come down to who gets to the board first. Pre-regisstration makes it just like the rest of the conference, and it's hard to register a time slot in advance when you've not seen the agenda for the rest of the conference. I originally intended to speak on Monday or Tuesday, but because of my schedule has to leave it until Thursday. I would not have know this in advance, and would probably have had to cancel my session if I had pre-booked it. Just my thoughts. :) Tim... 2 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Unconference
Nov 30 2007, 5:48 PM EST Hello, I have to agree having to register would be against the whole point, the unConference allowed me to give my demo after my laptop and projector had a fight to the death during my session and if pre-registeration was a requirement I would not have been able to do that. I think there just needs to be a better way to broadcast that you are going to do an unConference. Luckily I grabbed everybody I knew that had a blog related to my presentation and posted on the OTN forums and was able to self advertise, not the most convenient way to do it but it worked. Anyway more unConference slots!! it was a great addition to OOW and a nice change from the standard sessions. Regards, Carl 1 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Unconference
Dec 2 2007, 5:08 AM EST Hi gang I kinda agree and disagree with Patrick. Because the Unconference sessions aren't listed on the Scheduler, it misses a great opportunity to advertise the Unconference slots (especially if punters aren't paying attention to all the rest of the OOW marketing collateral)... I really wanted to advertise before the event what time and where but couldn't (and did voice this at the ACE Director meeting)..... However now that I'm familiar with the idea of the Unconference, I think this would go against the idea of the Unconference as a whole, because it is meant to be free-flowing, non corporate, non vendor etc. And adding structure now will potential hinder the creative side of the Unconference in the future; who knows the potential of the Unconference in 5 years time. It's probably one of those Catch 22s we just need to live with. Instead we need to hook into the OOW Unconference marketing before hand, help promote it via our blogs, and potentially if we really want that speaking slot, work within other Oracle channels for an OOW "official" slot as separate to an Unconference slot. Cheers, CM. 0 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Unconference location
Dec 4 2007, 11:19 AM EST Since there's already been a tone of discussion about speaker pre-registration (I also oppose the idea), I'll confine myself to comments about the location. Parodoxically, I beleive that placement of the Unconference in the Exhibitor Hall would actually DECREASE attendance. The 2006 International Association for Identification conference held some vendor sessions in the Exhibitor Hall, but they were sparsely attended. When the 2007 IAI conference moved the exhibitor sessions to regular rooms, attendance increased dramatically. Perhaps we can insert blank placeholders in the formal schedule, which basically state that an Unconference session will be available at Room xxx; that would help with the visibility. To get updates on the specific sessions that will be held, would it be possible to have an electronic whiteboard that could be accessed via browser or SMS? 0 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Unconference
Dec 4 2007, 11:45 AM EST You guys got me wrong. :-) I was not proposing a speaker registration which occurs way in advance of OOW. The claim of a spot at the Unconference one day in advance is fine and makes it as agile as it should be. But it has to be electronically published somewhere what the schedule of the Unconference is. And the best place would be the session builder, so that OOW attendees can add it to there regular schedule after it has been published. That's the tool everybody is using to check where to go, what has changed and what's going on. Patrick 1 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Unconference
Dec 5 2007, 12:17 PM EST I agree--I would have probably attended more sessions if I could hop on a website somewhere and see the current schedule of unconference events. The only thing (and I mean the only thing) I thought was not cool about unconference was the complete lack of technology involved in the scheduling of the events. Seems like some smart person should be able to build one of those "easy" apex apps to hold a schedule :). I really have no idea how to do this, but I met an abundance of web 2.0-qualified dudes and dudettes that I'm sure could throw that together in an evening. I know that this year was sort of a "testing ground" for unconference, so now that we've all agreed that it should live on, maybe next year it'll be a bit more developed...technologically! 2 out of 3 found this valuable. RE: Unconference
Jul 19 2008, 1:04 PM EDT I second the final sentence. MORE SLOTS !!! Mornings too? More spaces? Evenings? Midnight? (just kidding). I am a little afraid of the Unconference being in the exhibit hall. That place is awfully noisy. The unconference was great, super, wunderbar, stupenda!!!! I want MORE! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Unconference location
Sep 18 2008, 2:10 PM EDT "Since there's already been a tone of discussion about speaker pre-registration (I also oppose the idea)"OK, I admit to flip-flopping. When speaker pre-registration became available for this year's Unconference, I took advantage of it. I guess no one will vote for me for U.S. President. :) Do you find this valuable? |
