ETA on Windows paravirtualized drivers?
Nov 23 2007, 12:48 PM EST
I'm just hoping somebody can provide an estimate on when these will be out. We are needing to start virtualizing some loads pretty soon. Have been actively looking at ESX, XenServer and Virtual Iron, but this product sounds like a contender. However, we are a Windows shop and without paravirtualized drivers, the performance penalties make Oracle VM a no go. Any ideas on how long we'll have to wait? 7  out of 9 found this valuable. Thank you. Very much interested. One other question since I haven't installed the product yet. How big in MB is the host? I know ESX 3i and XenServer are less than 50MB. With new Dell servers coming out with flash on the motherboard for VM host installs, I'm wondering if Oracle VM will be an option as well. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

right now a full install is about 700mb uncompressed (note esx is more uncompressed than what you show.). any flash/usb is > 1gb these days so I am not sure how much it matters as long a sits within a reasonable amount. would you prefer 100mb versus 500mb and not having a local login/console and a requirement to use a management server ? is that 400mb a big deal ? curious how much this really matters (eg I am not talking a full os install but just the core console.). somehow I think that the embedded bit is a stunt to require a management infrastructure ;-) but that's just my PERSONAL opinion. hehe.

either way, if you were to take a 1gb usb stick, you pop it in a system, do an install of the server CD, it would actually just work. most modern boards can do boot from usb disk.

Just what I was looking for. I'm not sure what size I'm looking for, just wanted to know since it is going to depend on how large the onboard flash is going to be on the upcoming systems. As to whether the flash drive is a stunt or not, we're still evaluating. By putting the booting OS on the flash drive, we have no spindles to crash, no spindles to spin up and keep powered and fewer drives to buy per physical system. Also, with most all the VM solutions, Oracle VM included, the Management server runs off host so the infrastructure needed seems the same to me across the board.

All in all, I am really excited to see those Windows drivers come out. I've seen a lot of smack talk about Oracle's entrance into the VM space, but I like what I read so far. Considering it is Xen based, it comes down to your management tools, support and pricing. For me, a big deal is the lower end offerings. XenSource limits you to 4 VM's on their free server. Virtual Iron gives you 12, but limits you to 1 proc and the management server in on server. Being able to run a single version of VM Host and management across the board, for prod servers down to lowly test servers, only buying support for the systems that need it is truly compelling.
