The future of Oracle Portal

Sten, thanks for organising the WebCenter vs Portal Unconference session.

Here are a few points mentioned in the session:

1. Mr Rahul Patel's presentation, "Oracle Portal 11 new features and Roadmap", did not contain any roadmap as far as I could tell. What exactly is the Portal roadmap? Maybe Oracle could clarify this, as a lot of Portal users seem to fear Portal will be dropped.

2. There are 2000 changes in Portal 11, but only a handful are mentioned (improved OmniPortlet, improved import/export, JSF portlet bridge, improved language support, WSRP 2.0 support, improved security) and most of these were available in WebCenter already. Users have asked for an update of the dated Portal user interface, and Web 2.0 features.

3. The JSF portlet bridge is part of WebCenter and requires a separate license. Will this be solved?

4. There is no migration path from Portal to WebCenter. How to migrate PL/SQL portlets?

Marcel Lipman.

Never attended the session, but asking Oracle what the roadmap for the Portal is a pretty good idea - especially now when Oracle aquired BEA???

No new version or upgrades on Portal for the last two years, gives someone something to think about...

Steffen

We are worried about it here. They have been terribly vague on what is ahead for Portal. I have heard they are having problems integrating WebCenter and Portal. Who knows. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Oracle's statement of direction on portals is not very clear to me. It is getting even more confusing now they have bought BEA, which means they have BEA WebLogic portal as well.

However, Oracle have made it clear they will not drop Oracle Portal. There will be a release 11 and possibly a release 12. I am not aware of any plans to integrate WebCenter and Portal.

Steffen,

there have been several minor patchsets to Oracle Portal in the last couple of years, the last being the 10.1.4.2 patchset, these contained some features such as being able to copy pages between page groups, Portal Repository JSR-170 adapter and compatibility modes of HTML 4.01, HTML 4.01 Transitional Loose or HTML 4.01 Strict. We never planned to release a major new version of Oracle Portal until R11 once 10.1.4 was out.

You can integrate PL/SQL portlets into your WebCenter applications as per the documentation:

Cheers,

Mick.

You will see an official statement of direction shortly on these topics, rest assured we are not 'dropping' any products.

Oracle Portal and Oracle WebCenter are already quite integrated and work well together. They can both share the same PDK and JSR-168 portlets, WebCenter can publish content from Oracle Portal directly via JSR-170 or indirectly via Page portlets, they can share the same OID users and groups and you can even publish your PL/SQL portlets in Oracle Portal. Also from WebCenter you can publish JSF applicatiosn as portlets into Oracle Portal via the JSF-Portlet bridge.

Cheers,

Mick.

I read many messages on Portlets here, but what about the Portal items (texte, files, images) ?
I'm afraid Portal and Webcenter do not exactly aim the same things : from what I could see Portal is more convenient for document sharing and presentation, and Webcenter is more convenient for data publishing in reports and portlets.

We've been using Portal for 6 years now, it contains about 20 000 files (yes it does !) and I can't imagine recreating the whole thing manually into Webcenter if Portal was to become depreacated in a while (as some Oracle salesforces told me a few month ago). We could "extract" the file via webdav by the way, but it would still be too much time consuming if no migration tool were provided.

Thank you very much Marcel for this SoD.
I'm waiting for the new one Mandrew talked about regarding integration of BEA.

Best,
Arnaud

Loko,

You don't have to worry about your Portal items. As Mick says, they can be published as JSR-170 (standard for content) and included in your WebCenter pages if you decide to go to WebCenter. But there is nothing wrong with staying with Oracle Portal for a long while. We have built many projects with Oracle Portal, and plan to migrate exactly none of these to WebCenter.

Cheers

Back from the UKOUG conference, I believe you can start worrying about your portal items. It appears that only public items can be published as JSR-170 items for consumption from WebCenter (so your carefully constructed web of user access rights is lost), and Oracle seem to be backing away from an earlier commitment to use JSR-170 content in Oracle Portal. Do you find this valuable?
