Spatial

Oracle "Spatial" is the Oracle Database Server capability to store all sorts of "Location"-data.

Why is spatial so cool ?
It is fairly easy to "location-enable" your own data by just adding a "spatial" column to your table and add location related data and you are set to show your data in a map (admittedly you have to define a spatial index and wire it to the spatial functions by inserting the tablename into the spatial_metadata_view).

How to show my location-enabled data in a map?
You may use the Mapviewer, which is a part of the Oracle Application Server (all editions). You may setup this in minutes (OK, let's say 1 hour) using the Quickstart Kit which may be downloaded here.

We have to distinguish between LOCATOR and SPATIAL

Oracle LOCATOR is a feature of Oracle Database Standard and Enterprise Editions that provides core location functionality needed by most customer applications.
Oracle SPATIAL is an option for Oracle Enterprise Edition that provides advanced spatial features to support high-end GIS and LBS solutions (like Rasterdata functions for underlaying scanned images e.g. Satelite images, Network Datamodel, Linerar Referencing, Topology Functionality and the Geocoder).

Oracle MapViewer is an Oracle Application Server Java component and JDeveloper extension used for map rendering and viewing geospatial data managed by Oracle Spatial or Locator.
The latest Mapviewer (since Feb.2006) contains ORACLE MAPS, a well documented javascript libary with a wealth of functions like GOOGLE MAPS.
Feel free to look at Bernhards BLOG: http://oracle-maps.blogspot.com (sorry - in German).
A demo site where ORACLE MAPS for the first time runs on an external site is the eLocation Service:

eLocation based on Oracle Maps

Oracle Spatial, Oracle Locator and MapViewer comply with the OGC Standard Specifications.

What now ? What comes next ?
Want to develop as cool applications as GOOGLE MAPS by using ORACLE MAPS in a couple of hours?
