SQL Developer is Oracle's free-of-charge graphical database admin and development tool.

While it is aimed at Oracle database developers, it includes connectivity to MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access and Sybase databases, mostly for the purposes of migration. It is a Java-based tool, and is therefore available for a wide range of platforms including Windows, Linux and Mac OSX.

Its major competitors are commercial products, including TOAD from Quest Software and PL/SQL Developer from Allround Automations. It is a relatively recent entrant into the market and is not as full-featured as the commercial products. With over1.2 million downloads since inception 2 years ago,users are quickly moving to the product.

SQL Developer supports Oracle 9.201 and above and is now packaged with Oracle Database 11g R1, also to be included with future releases of the Oracle Database.
