What's the rationale for only having 11g available as 32bit Linux. Doesn't that somewhat contradict the ubiquity that Oracle would like to portray?

I am creating a table and then loading approx 1.5 million records into this table.
The insert statement that I use is something like this: insert into tgt_tablename select * from source_tablename My question is: would it be advisable to create the index after the insert or before the insert. I feel creating the index before or after the load will not cause any difference if the table is a new one. Kindly advise. Thanks

I have created a database in Oracle 9i that has numerous application packages, tables and views that reside on separate schema.
The development staff require access to multiple schema objects on the db but I am loathed to assign the 'ALL' to the DDL privileges as I would like to restrict access to a specific schema without limiting the developers to their own schema. Does anyone have any detail on a good model for this level of security? Regards

The error description seem to indicate that at least the deadlock error is the result of a frozen two-phase commit. I get this error message when trying to run these transactions through WLS 8.1SP5 with JDBC connection pools set up and pointing to a single Oracle DBMS 9.2.1 instance. I'm not sure if the origin of the problem is the Oracle init or WebLogic JDBC Connection Pool settings or both.
Any help would be great.

I have a third party application running in 9i (non-RAC) that we are about to upgrade to 10g RAC. The product vendor indicated that since the application is only certified for 10gR1 we can only go to 10gR1 RAC but also indicated that we can go to CRS 2.0 to avoid upgrading that portion later. I'm aware that this "should" work but I'm interested in day-to-day issues with the mismatched versions, if there are any. Does this make sense? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

in a WP "Oracle Database 10g: The Database for the Grid, An Oracle White Paper November 2003"
the authors said: "Resonance will dynamically grow and shrink the number of servers your individual databes are running on in this cluster to meet your service-level objectives. This is done automatically without requiring any user intervention. ..." In my knowledge, these amazing feature never was implemented in 10g. Does someone know something about this in 11g ? |

hi all,
I would like to discuss about the new diagnostic_dest parameter. It could be a good idea but i am surprised that it can't be possible to keep old dump parameters as deprecated parameters (they are directly obsolete parameters in 11g). Most of dba startup/shutdowns & supervision scripts parse the alert.log file to return an exit code. So they need to be changed during the migration. It seems that Oracle developpement teams didn't feel that this new feature has serious consequencies on production database.

Hi All,
I am using RMAN to backup my Apps 11i Database. When RMAN applies the Retention Policy which is set to redundacy 1, its takes more than one hour. So the Whole backup takes 1 hour 30 mins. If i apply the same script on the test environment, the backup finishes within 30 mins. What can be the reasons.

I am searching to find any best practices or discussions on sending email from an Oracle database. So far, I can find many tutorials and HowTo guides for the syntax of calling UTL_MAIL (which I am already familiar with).
Does anyone know of any reference which digs a bit deeper into design tips or recommendations? Such as using a queue table to send mail asyncronously (locking or failing a nightly batch job due to a mail server problem does not seem that wise to me). -Thanx
