CRM Gadgets
Oracle Openworld 2007 : several of the keynote and breakout sessions featured desktop and web page Gadgets for Siebel CRM and Siebel CRM On Demand. As the development has been driven very much by the community, we are going to use this forum to drive the development and release of the gadgets to our customers.
Oracle Applications Gadgets are small desktop applications that provide end users with critical information from their enterprise applications in a non-intrusive manner. Oracle Applications Gadgets are based on open, industry standards for gadget development such as HTML, XML, and JavaScript and can consume services provided by standards based technologies such as Oracle Fusion Middleware. Oracle Applications Gadgets provide secure access to enterprise application data and intelligently mash-up content from other enterprise applications and internet data sources. Featuring an intuitive user experience, Oracle Applications Gadgets are based on Web 2.0 design principles that provide users with a pleasurable and productive user experience through a seamless marriage of personal information, internet content, and enterprise data. Oracle Applications Gadgets are scheduled for availability in calendar year 2008. They will be made available initially on the Google Gadgets platform, then Adobe Flash/AIR. The gadgets will run on Windows, MAC, Linux (subject to platform restrictions) and later in the year, on any mobile device such as iPhone and Windows Mobile.

The first release of gadgets focus on the CRM use case for a Sales person - and delivers a core set of tools that delivers value for any sales professional - but also drives added value for the business. The key gadgets planned for initial release are: Contact Gadget Accounts Gadget Opportunities gadget Quota gadget Search gadget The initial widgets will support Oracle Siebel Enterprise CRM applications as well as Oracle CRM On Demand. | Web Gadgets A Web Gadget is a portable chunk of code that can be installed and executed within any separate HTML-based web page by an end user. Other terms used to describe a web widget include gadget, badge, module, capsule, snippet, mini and flake. Web widgets are often but not always built using DHTML, Adobe Flash, or JavaScript. An example of an Oracle Applications-based Web Widget can be seen here, where an Oracle CRM On Demand Message Center widget has been embedded as an iFrame into an iGoogle Web page. | |
| Desktop Gadgets A Desktop Gadget is a downloadable computer desktop accessory that provides easy access to frequently used functions and provides access to services such as the latest news or current weather such as the example in Figure 5. Most Desktop Gadgets can be created with standard XML, JavaScript or VBScript depending upon their complexity. A Desktop gadget provides relevant information to the user in a non-intrusive manner. Desktop gadgets blur the line between the web and the desktop by pulling content out of the browser and integrating it into the desktop and are becoming increasingly popular with both business users and consumers. The advantages of Desktop gadgets over Web gadgets include: Desktop gadgets live outside of the browser – hence secure Desktop gadgets have access to local resources – such as file system and office apps Desktop gadgets can support offline use, background downloads and self-updates Desktop gadgets provide greater interaction with the rest of the system through standard desktop interaction There are many different Desktop gadget engines available.
