Presenter: Richard Foote
Time : 2pm
Date : Monday 12 November 2007
Location : Moscone West 3rd Floor Overlooks

Session Description: For something as fundamental in Oracle as Indexes, there's an incredible amount of misconceptions, misunderstandings and pure myths regarding how they function and should be maintained. This session will take an indepth look at Oracle B-Tree indexes, investigates index block and tree dumps, proves with simple demos how they really function, discusses the rare occacions when indexes become problematic, explores the big question of when they should really be rebuilt and explores the key differences between a rebuild and a coalesce (or shrink)
Presenter: Richard Foote has been an Oracle DBA for 12 years, with another 10 years IT experience before that. Based in sunny Canberra, Australia, Richard has been an Oracle OakTable Network member since 2002 and contributes regularly on the comp.database.oracle.server newsgroup and metalink forums.
